Green Book (2018)
Oscar-winning film Green Book stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. This biographical comedy/drama depicts the true story of Don Shirley, who is a Black classical pianist that toured the Deep South together with Italian-American bouncer Tony Vallelonga. In the 1950s, Victor Green wrote a book which documented their story and identified places which were safe—and not that safe—for African Americans to go to in the racist Deep South. The film won several Oscars and awards from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and the Screen Actors Guild.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
Nicole Holofcener and Marielle Heller worked together on the film Can You Ever Forgive Me?, starring Melissa McCarthy. The actor plays Lee Israel, who is a struggling writer trying to fix her failed career in writing by faking letters from dead authors and playwrights. The film marks a turn for the actor, who previously starred in several comedies including Bridesmaids and Mike & Molly. McCarthy’s and Richard E. Grant’s performances both received plenty of praise and earned them Oscar nominations. Julianne Moore was originally cast as Lee Israel, though the role ended up going to McCarthy.
