It felt like just another day at work at first. In the morning, officer Jeff Colvin began his patrol, which he did every day on the job. He looked around for the small hand as he reached the enormous window facing the road. There was no child by the window, to his surprise. Where might the kid be? In his stomach, he felt a ball of dread form. Her absence could not have been a good sign. He knew that, as soon as possible, he had to do something about it. In the end, everybody was relieved that when he did, he decided to act. Who knows what would have happened otherwise?

As she was looking around for Rio, Briana was full of anxiety. She checked every nook and cranny of her daughter’s apartment. The little girl liked to hide, but all of her usual hiding spots were empty. She even checked the cupboards, the beds, and the hamper for the laundry. No digits. No dice. Only when she saw that the front door was wide open did her panic grow. The worst sign was that in the hallway, Rio’s backpack had slumped down.
