A Mix of Ancestry
Tom Cruise is descended from a blend of Irish, German, and English ancestry. With an 840-year Irish heritage, the Cruise family has an outstanding pedigree of knights, barons, and rebels. Cruise received a Best Actor nomination for the 1992 movie “Far and Away,” which he starred in. But several movie critics harshly blasted his effort at an Irish accent, labeling it as one of the worst in cinema. On a more upbeat note, evaluations of Cruise’s portrayal in “The Last Samurai,” in which he played a Samurai warrior educated by a soldier of the American Civil War (Ken Watanabe), were far more favorable.
A Complete 180°
Although Tom Cruise is currently one of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, his early goals were very different. Cruise was accepted into the Franciscan Seminary Preparatory Seminary as a teenager with the intention of becoming a priest. Cruise grew raised in a profoundly religious Catholic environment. However, when Cruise made the decision to pursue an acting career, his course abruptly changed. He made his acting debut in 1985’s “The Outsiders,” and after that, he went on to land a number of parts in both television and movies. The movie “Top Gun” from 1986 was the one where Cruise got his big-screen debut.
