Despite this, Cruise has managed to give outstanding performances in each of his military roles without being constrained by typecasting. He has nine times portrayed a soldier on screen, beginning with “Taps” in 1981 and continued with memorable parts in “Top Gun,” “The Last Samurai,” and various other movies. Cruise has a continued love for playing military characters in “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” his most recent military-related role. He clearly has a great appreciation for these kinds of roles.
